ABOUT OIL TO GAS CONVERSION
Why convert from fuel oil to natural gas?
Of the four main fuels used to heat US homes; natural gas is the most popular and now the cheapest as well. A decade ago, gas cost about 80 percent of an equivalent amount of oil; it now costs less than half of oil, as oil prices have risen and America’s boom in natural gas drilling has kept gas prices low.
If you are still using oil to heat your home or business it is because you may think that you may not have another alternative. Maybe it’s because you do not have natural gas piped into your area by the utility company or the oil delivery company makes you believe that using oil is the best and the greatest.
HVAC technicians or local plumbers in areas where there is no natural gas piping are leading their customers to believe that their only choice might be propane or wood burning stoves aside from fuel oil. This is because these same people that service the HVAC/R industry do not know any better themselves, and so they recommend only what they do know. Sometimes this will get you to buy something that is regretable when you find out about other alternatives. The other alternatives by the way are based on fuel-less heating systems in which we will partially cover below. For this topic "Oil to Gas Conversion” we will mainly discuss some of the many ways of converting heating to natural gas.
There are many reasons why you should convert to natural gas from using fuel oil or liquid propane. Natural gas is about 1 ½ times cheaper than oil at current prices and propane is about 1 ¼ times more expensive than natural gas. Based on fuel comparisons between natural gas, oil, and LP gas, converting from oil or propane to natural gas makes economic sense. If you convert from oil to gas (natural gas) today, and depending on what you pay to have these gas heating units installed, typically fuel derived savings pay for the installation costs of oil to gas conversions in a relatively short period of time. So if you are spending let say $3,000 on fuel oil and natural gas is 1 ½ times less, then your savings should be about $1800. this money saved just by making the switch from oil to gas. And with everything the same, efficiency and fuel cost wise, a $7,200 installation cost paid for an oil to gas conversion will pay for itself in 4 year’s time. Money then saved after four years can be spent on a vacation, education, or invested to make more money. Bottom line is, you won't be burning anymore money away by staying with fuel oil. It is a smart move to convert to natural gas from oil, based on the difference in energy prices of these two fuels alone, but there is more to it.
When you switch to natural gas from oil there is less maintenance and less use of electricity. This is additional money saved when converting. It requires more consumption of electricity to pump oil to a pressure high enough so that it can be sprayed through a hole the size of a pin hole. After the oil fuel is atomized, it then has to be ignited by a constant high voltage source. The added wear and tear on oil fired mechanical equipment makes it short lived compared to gas. Filters, strainers, electrodes have to be changed periodically. Don't let that oil tank run dry or you may have to call an oil service person to prime and bleed off the air from the fuel oil line. Some people complain that their oil burners are spitting out flames, or that it is smoking their whole house. Face up to it, oil is dirty fuel no matter what the people that make money selling oil say. Un-necessarily polluting our planet even more by continuing to use expensive fuel oil when there other cleaner and cheaper heating alternatives including renewable green energy sources is not a good choice for our environment nor for the pocket. If an oil unit's heat exchanger starts to clog up, it can become unrelenting with an ever lowering of efficiency output thus causing higher and higher fuel oil bills until this unit finally vibrates and rattles the whole house whenever it comes on.
For owners of buildings or residences with oil heating equipment such oil boilers, oil burners, and oil furnaces, converting to gas is a logical and economical solution especially if it is a multifamily dwelling with only one large unit to heat the entire place. If the infrastructure of the heating delivery system is already there then making a conversion from oil to gas becomes relatively simple especially if access to natural gas is already there or the utility company will put it in free of charge. It is best to convert oil fired equipment in its entirety when converting to gas. If it is a very large and relatively new boiler with an oil burner, it might be more cost effective to just switch the oil burner into a gas burner. Cleaning the boiler contaminants because of fuel oil burning, remnants of sometimes incomplete combustion can be very difficult at times especially if the boiler is old and has rust from the combination of heat and moisture. It is also suggested that the chimney be checked or cleaned if making the conversion from oil to gas.
With oil furnaces being converted to gas, it is best to replace the whole unit if it is small or medium in size. As of May 2013, gas furnace replacements including oil to gas conversions now require separate venting due to mandatory higher efficiency levels. These gas furnaces can no longer be vented through a chimney with other gas appliances sharing it as the exhaust is cooler and very corrosive. This leaves orphaned gas hot water heaters that have to be dealt with. Incidentally, when converting to a high efficiency gas furnace with or without air conditioning, always opt for a dual pipe venting system where fresh air is drawn outside for combustion rather than the inside of a house or building; less competition for the air you need to breathe. For oil to gas conversions of furnaces with air conditioning we advise replacing the cooling unit's condenser and evaporator coil with a higher efficiency model as the savings from here will also help pay for the oil to gas furnace conversion.
Whenever you are converting from oil to gas you should have someone that can assess your needs overall rather than just purely make the fuel swap without having further knowledge of energy efficiency. It is like going to a dentist that can only do teeth extraction and dentures. That HVAC/R person should be able to present several options or alternatives and be able to discuss these with you. And if the final outcome is an oil to gas conversion, then if there are mistakes from the previous installation causing improper combustion, fuel delivery, leakage, etc. these problems should be addressed with and not merely transferred over to the new installation. You deserve a headache free installation with equipment that lasts a long time.
Today's heating and cooling equipment not only economizes fuel consumption but also deliver advancement in comfort. Some of the features involve variable speed air handlers, dual stage burners, thermostats made for dual stage burners, slow ramp-up of speed when cooling or heating, control over the internet and so on. It is best to make sure that the HVAC technician who will making your conversion from oil to gas is NATE certified. North American Technician Excellence certification is considered to be the finest in the HVACR industry.

CONVERTING OIL, PROPANE, KEROSENE, WOOD, AND NATURALGAS TO FUEL-LESS HEATING
Why convert from fossil fuels such as oil, wood, propane, kerosene, and even cleaner burning natural gas into fuel-less heating?
The conversion to fuel-less heating is more economical in the long run than an already economical oil to gas conversion. Fuel-less heating is based on renewable green energy. It is self-sustaining and does not produce pollution even against the cleanest burning fossil fuels such as natural gas. Fuel-less heating is a form of alternative heating when compared to conventional heating using fossil fuels.
Fuel-less heating can be achieved in many ways, but we’re only going to mention air source and ground source thermal heating. Air Source Heating is very efficient nowadays with its load balancing technology using sophisticated computer driven algorithms and other innovations, but still not as efficient as geo-thermal ground source heating. Geothermal heating and cooling in our area is when the below ground temperature of approximately 55 degrees is utilized for providing heat as well as cooling using heat pumps. Geothermal heating can achieve 600% in efficiency delivering heat unlike fossil fuels which a best can deliver a theoretical 100% efficiency. Geothermal heating is therefore considered by knowledgeable sources as the "Greenest of the Green Renewable Energy Source". Air source fuel-less heating however, is still no slouch when it comes to super-efficient heating providing up to 400% in efficiency. And when combined with the ability to detect the presence of people and to automatically ramp down the temperature when heating and vice versa ramp up temperature when cooling when no one is there, these and other energy saving features such as remote temperature monitoring for multiple dwelling these add up to more savings.
Air source heating is achieved when the heat from the cold outdoor air is captured and brought in to a conditioned environment. We consider air conditioning to be a conditioned environment where it provides us with warmth or cooling along with filtered clean air at the proper humidity level at all times. We are going to try to explain how fuel-less heating is achieved from a refrigeration standpoint. If a refrigerant can boil at below freezing temperatures then it should have no problem boiling at freezing temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When a refrigerant boils it produces heat. This heat is then captured and brought indoors so that a fuel-less heating system does not use energy to create heat. This is why it is fuel-less heating can be super-efficient in providing heat, the only energy used is to circulate the refrigerant and to blow the conditioned air indoors. Some of these fuel-less models can supply ample heat at minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you live where there are no natural gas lines and you are being told by HVAC people that your only option is either to use propane or fuel oil for heating, it is not true; air source fuel-less heating is a viable solution that is relatively in-expensive compared to the costs of propane or fuel oil that you will be paying year after year.
Fuel-less heating can come with the highest rated SEER (27.2) cooling available, this is because on some models it is ductless, such as with a Ductless Mini-split AC System and the technology that goes behind it. There is less cooling loss than compared to a conventional ducted central ac system. We like these fuel-less heating systems that are using renewable energy green sources; high efficiency AC cooling in the summer and fuel-less heating during the winter. We offer two manufacturing lines: Fujitsu ductless mini-split ac systems and Spacepak small hole ducted chiller ac systems. You can find these at: http://www.nj-ac-service.com and http://nj-ac-chiller-service.com or by clicking on the airconditioning pop-up menu .
Even if you are already using a gas boiler for heating, do not have ductwork and want high efficiency air conditioning, look no further that the Fujitsu ductless mini-split ac system or the Spacepak AC chiller. The Spacepak AC chiller uses cold water for AC cooling and hot water for AC heating. With the Spacepak AC Chiller, the refrigerant stays outside unlike conventional central air conditioning systems. You do not have to get rid of your current gas heating system, use it for backup instead for those once in a blue moon super cold windy days.
Whatever your heating and cooling needs are, whether it is for an oil to gas conversion, fuel-less heating, or high efficiency air conditioning come invite us to assess you needs. We are Energy Efficiency Tech certified, Indoor Air Quality certified, and NATE Oil & Gas installation & service certified.
